Some Lions in Jerusalem
The beloved symbol of the city of Jerusalem is the lion of Judah. But, of course, as Jews, we have a problem with his representation. We have a few lions in the local zoo, of course. And we even had a minister of govt. who used to keep a couple of them as pets, but when it comes to putting a statue of a lion in a public place, it isn't so simple. After all, our holy scriptures have forbidden the establishment of statues in the likeness of animals or human beings. So we make sculptures that are either quite abstract, or humorous in design. Our lions look like toys, or are abstract representations. The lion on our city flag is a line drawing. The lion on the park benches is made of negative space, holes punched into the backrest of the bench. But if you look around, you can still see plenty of lions.
These photographs are not for sale, and are meant to share with the visitor a bit of the feeling of Jerusalem, and our beloved mascot.
